People Say I'm weird,
Everyone thinks I'm lucky,
They think I worship the devil,
They all say I'm so popular,
I know, I don't,
I know, I am,
and I wish to be left alone,
I wish that I wasn't,
yet, people say I'm nice,
but, people call me names,
because I'm just considerate,
they call me a prep,
I don't try and be,
I don't try to be,
but, I just am,
yet, I don't care,
at least I'm not popular,
at least I'm popular,
and I'm not labeled a prep,
I'm glad I'm a prep,
Although, I do have many friends,
at least I have friends,
and I always have someone to turn to,
yet, I always, somehow, feel alone,
I only have true friends,
I don't have any true friends,
and we go to eachother for help,
but, I can still tell them my problems,
and we solve each others problems,
and those problems just become "drama",
and all the problems seem to go away,
and all the problems just get worse,
although I don't like labels,
yes, I have a label,
I am labeled as a Goth,
I am labeled as a Prep,
It may be good, or bad, or even both,
I don't think thats very good,
but, I can still keep my beliefs...
but, I can still be popular...

When I wrote this poem it was targeted at a few people that I knew. One of those individuals was extremely fake and the other was totally aware of her surroundings. Both put on a front and choose a stereotype that best suited their personalities. This isn't meant as a response for the Preppy/Goth culture as a whole, but just how I felt about these individuals who couldn't see what they were participating in. While it sways in favor of the Goth girl, whom I knew personally... it was meant to describe a "security blanket" for the two of them. Notice how the Goth girl is treated in the first few stanzas, it's not all lollipops and gumdrops for the both of them. - VK Artist Comment from 2004: I wrote this poem a whiles back was originally just called "Labels". However because one of the people in it is based upon couldn't understand it I added "Goth vs Prep". The poem is based upon the labels which society gives us. Though I can say I am not prep nor considered goth, it is loosely based on a goth girl and a preppy girl in high school. High school for some is a social status, and for others it simply just is. The first line of each stanza is our Goth girl, and the second is the prep. Have fun with this, read it to yourself in different voices or read it allowed with a friend, the effect is better that way. This is one of my best works, yet still just another silly human nature, try and get into the heads of people kinda poem. enjoy. |
